Program Description:
Salamanca rooftopsStudents in the Colby in Salamanca - Integrated program are directly enrolled at the Universidad de Salamanca taking classes along-side Spanish students and students from around the world.  The University of Salamanca, which was founded in 1218, is the oldest university in Spain and the third oldest western university.  The academic program begins with a three-week orientation, comprised of linguistic and cultural components which allows students to participate in intensive Spanish language preparation, familiarize themselves with the city of Salamanca, and work with the Resident Director to select and enroll in regular university courses at the university taught by faculty of the Universidad de Salamanca.
A curriculum of “core” courses (regular University courses with an extra hour per week of tutorials) and other courses provide opportunities for the study of literature, history, politics and law, sociology, art history, and other subjects. It is impossible to know which university courses will be offered in advance and the Resident Director will assist you in selecting appropriate courses during the orientation period.

In addition to the three-week orientation program, students typically enroll in four courses per semester, plus a mandatory, 2-credit writing class. You will be able to select from a wide variety of courses but your final university course selections will be made upon arrival in consultation with Colby’s Program Director in Salamanca. You may also select from several “test documenttest document” which highlight some of the special opportunities available and some previously-approved courses Colby students have enjoyed in the past.

All students are required to spend the first month in a carefully selected homestay. After that, students in the integrated program have the choice to remain with their host families or to move into an apartment with Spanish students for the remainder of the semester.

The program also includes:
  • Social activities with Spanish student animadores.
  • Field trips and excursions
  • All cultural activities (museums, movies, theatre, sport, etc…) in Spain are reimbursed 50%.
  • Internships or volunteer activities through the University or in the community are also possible.
