Program Description:
The ancient city of Bologna is one of Europe’s great centers of learning and a superbly preserved jewel of medieval charm. Our program is based at the Brown in Italy office in Bologna, near our partner institution, the University of Bologna (UniBo), the oldest in Europe, with a proud history of dynamic, well- respected scholars like Dante, Petrarch, Erasmus, and Copernicus.

Brown's Bologna program begins with a one-month orientation during which students learn about the city and meet with on-site staff to discuss course selection. The orientation equips students with the skills and knowledge they need to participate in a full-immersion study abroad experience.

All students are required to take the Intensive Language and Culture proseminar.  In addition, students enroll in the equivalent of three 60-hour courses at the University of Bologna. Students have access to the full range of academic offerings at the University of Bologna. Spring students may also take one studio and visual arts course at the Accademia di Belle Arti (Academy of Fine Arts), if they can provide a portfolio of their previous work.
